Gordon’s philosophical questions, motivational secrets, steadfast encouragement and praise are discussed and analyzed. Additionally, Marten talks about his new book, Leaving the House of Tears, and the rewards of literacy.
Workshop Description: Ninety-minute workshop
1. Learn new teaching method. The workshop explores the journey of an adult basic literacy tutor and his functionally illiterate student, demonstrating how asking questions is valuable to the learning process. Examples of appropriate questions include:
• Do you know the difference between knowledge and wisdom?
• What motivated you to be here today?
• What is a mentor?
• Do you know how to listen?
The workshop reveals how answers to these questions provide the direction for the journey the tutor and student take together. Teaching methods discussed: teaching reading through writing, observing the road signs of grammar (punctuation marks), word of the day, paragraph of the week, reading out loud, reading silently.
Attendees are given a few words and asked to write a paragraph.
2. Philosophical questions motivate you to write. The course explores with attendees how the tutor motivates the student by having the student write about topics, such as:
• What do you want out of life?
• What holds you back?
• Personal stories (family or private).
Attendees are asked why the tutor used these philosophical questions.
3. Learn steadfast encouragement and praise. The course explores how the tutor encourages the student by use of ongoing support and praise, and why this method is effective.
