MARTEN GRIEGO
• Literacy Advocate
• Motivational Speaker
• Award Winning Author
Marten Griego is an advocate for adult literacy. Just twelve years ago, this Albuquerque, NM native was functionally illiterate. Today, Griego is the award-winning, published author of Leaving the House of Tears. He is also an engaging, dynamic public speaker and the founder and owner of Future Destinations Publishing.
How did Griego make the amazing transition from functionally illiterate, depression, substance abuser to author, board member, volunteer tutor, workshop presenter, mentor, motivational speaker and entrepreneur? The story behind Griego’s success is a compelling one, which he shares in his memoir. The book captures the gritty details of his painful youth and shows how he ultimately came to terms with the many challenges he faced.
Griego’s story doesn’t end with the publication of his book. Inspired by the people who taught him so much, Griego is committed to giving back to the community. These days the vibrant Griego provides insights and inspiration as a motivational speaker on behalf of adult literacy. Not only does Griego speak from experience, he also speaks from the heart. He has given over 160 presentations and workshops and continues to find opportunities to inspire and motivate people everywhere.
Griego is in demand as a public speaker. Rotary International showcased Griego at their convention in New York and he traveled to Virginia to present the Featured Session workshop at ProLiteracy Worldwide Annual Conference. Griego was invited to Alabama to share his story with the Court Referral Officer and Community Corrections’ program. He advocated for adult literacy to members of Congress and in the State Legislature.
In 2007, ProLiteracy Worldwide celebrated Griego’s achievements and contributions with the prestigious Ruth J. Colvin and Frank C. Laubach Award for Student Excellence in Achievement.
Griego’s memoir was a finalist for the 2007 New Mexico Book Awards and renowned author Tony Hillerman introduced Griego at a book reading in Albuquerque. ReadWest, Inc., an adult literacy program in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, conferred honors on Griego two years in a row as the 2007 and 2008 Literacy Advocate of the Year. In 2008, the New Mexico Senate recognized Griego on the floor.
Griego has begun to bring his powerful message to the teen market. In 2009, Griego’s book was incorporated into the curriculum at Nuestros Valores Charter School and in 2010 La Academia de Esperanza Charter School.
In between his many public appearances and other activities, Griego serves on the board of directors at ReadWest. Inc. and shares his enthusiasm by mentoring three adult literacy students.
Griego is a generous man with big dreams. He recently kicked off his Million-Dollar Literacy Fundraiser. For every book Griego sells, he donates a percentage to literacy. He’s already donated over $5,000.00.
In 2010, Griego is partnering with the New Mexico Coalition for Literacy. With the help of a generous grant from the Verizon Foundation, he will take his passion for literacy to 13 areas around the state on New Mexico, making motivational community outreach presentations and specialized workshops focused on adult literacy issues. He speaks from experience and from the heart, using his unique gifts to give back to his fellow New Mexicans.
Of course, it’s not all work for the personable, energetic Griego. He is often seen on the dance floor and after years as a golf course employee, he’s become an avid golfer himself. Griego continues to be a voracious reader – these days he’s reading classic literature and making up for lost time.
